I love that my kids both play on sports teams. That they are passionate about improving their physical skills at their given sport and that they are learning how to play nice with others and the true meaning of the phrase “sportsmanship.” I have also seen how being student athletes has helped each of them become more responsible and have an outlet outside of their rigorous academic schedules to bond with their teammates who they might not have otherwise befriended. It basically broadens their world and their social experience while at the same time helps them to stay physically sharp! And of course as a concerned parent I have always had safety in mind whenever either of my children are involved in any activity and that includes school, camp and sports like basketball, baseball and football.
In this time of heightened awareness about injuries and especially head injuries and concussions after getting acquainted recently with the site ( which is currently sponsoring a grant that football teams can apply for! They are asking you to share your story with Riddell and apply for a grant to receive upgraded gear for their football team. Fans, administrators, coaches, parents and players can submit their teams via the website at Riddell.com/SmarterFootball read more below!) I was amazed at how they have worked dilligently to make football as safe as current technology will allow. And here is the truth of the matter-my son lives for football- he has like 30 of them around our house and we just signed him up for the season as we realized he was ready for real instruction and craved more than the usual playing outside with his friends on our lawn!
So parents ( who have questions like me) What has Riddell been doing to this ever evolving sport to make it safer? Keep reading!
From building flexibility into helmet designs to creating the game’s preeminent head impact monitoring technology, Riddell incorporates Smarter Football throughout its product line to better protect athletes and help them perform at their best.
What does Riddell say on its Smarter Football site to promote state of the art safety in football?
Initially they are promoting the proper fit of helmets which is essential for a players comfort and protection. It is important that you practice and play sensibly, and as always, teach or utilize proper form and head positioning when participating in football contact. A properly fitted helmet does not prevent the serious head or neck injuries a player might receive while participating in football. The goal was to design a helmet with fully-integrated components and innovations for peak athlete performance and state-of-the-art protection. They looked at all levels of competition – wants and needs, as well as those of coaches, equipment managers and athletic trainers.
What does Riddell say on their site regarding concussions?
Concussions are traumatic brain injuries that must be taken seriously. Concussions can occur in any sport or recreational activity. That is why all coaches, parents, and athletes need to learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs. Riddell also has Insite Impact Response System which is a helmet- based impact monitoring designed to alert when single or multiple impacts are sustained during a game or practice.
Besides helmets is there any other equipment our players can benefit from?
The Ripkord™ shoulder Pad Removal System. It is designed to ensure the most effective medical management, diagnosis and treatment of suspected head and neck injuries to each and every football player at the high school, college and professional levels. RipKord’s emergency management technology allows athletic trainers and medical professionals to treat severe Injuries during a critical window of time by allowing immediate access to the chest and airways.
Besides taking great strides in football safety what else is Riddell promoting at this time?
